極めて単純な契約書でない限り、契約書の冒頭に、その契約書に登場する重要な言葉を定義づける規定を置くのが一般的です。

定義規定を置く趣旨は、重要な言葉の理解について当事者間のコミニケーションギャップが生じないように、その言葉の意味内容を統一することにあります。
また、繰り返し登場する長い固有名詞や文を簡略化して示すことによって、契約書を読みやすくすることもあります。
定義規定は、これらの趣旨が満たされるように、適切に言葉が定義されること、定義としての言葉が定義される意味内容を適切に表すように工夫する必要があります。
定義規定に列挙する言葉は、一旦契約書のドラフトをした後に、その契約書で繰り返し使われたり、当事者間で意味内容の理解に違いが生じたりする恐れのあるものを選ぶようにするとよいでしょう。
法律文章は美しさよりも正確さが重要です。したがって多少くどいと思われる表現となっても、当事者が正確な意味内容を把握できる程度に記載しましょう。
また契約書の条文を読んだときに、定義であることがわかるように、定義は（一文字目を）大文字で表示するようにしましょう。

定義条項では、まず本文で、「本契約では、文脈から別の意味に解釈すべき場合を除き、次の各語は（単数・複数を問わず）下記の各意味を有するものとする。」と記載します。
英文では、
・　Unless that context requires otherwise（unless the contrary intention appears）, following words shall have the following meanings in this agreement:／As Used in this agreement , the following teams Shall have the following meanings:
とか
・The following words and terms shall have the following meanings when used herein and such definitions shall apply to both the singular and plural forms of any such words and terms：
などと記載します。

次に、これに続けて.　a.b.c.....や1.2.3.....などと号数を付して、又は、定義される言葉のアルファベット順に記載していきます。
a. ----とは----を意味する。
a. "-----" means a ---- .
と定義を書いていきます。

なお、「関連会社」や「グループ会社」のように、言葉で定義付けるのが難しい場合や、支配比率の変動等によって時間の経過によって対象が変わってしまうことがあります。
このような場合には、言葉で定義を完結させることにこだわらす、別紙をつけて、甲の関連会社とは、別紙1記載の各会社を言うと表現する方法もあります。

以下にいくつか定義規定の例を示します。

・"Party" means --kk or --kk, and, when used in the plural, shall mean both of them.

・"Agreement " means this agreement.

・"Previous Agreement" means that ----- Agreement between the Parties effective as of M/D/Year.

・"Statement of Work（作業明細書）" means the Statement of Work developed pursuant to below.

・"Hardware" means the central processing unit and accompanying operating system set out in schedule - and which is to be utilized by costomer of operation of Software.

・"Installation" means the delivery, setting up and configuring of the Computer Hardware and System Software and Application Software pursuant to the terms hereof in accordance with the Statement of Work accepted by --kk;　

・"Dollar" means the currency of the United States of America.
